Carpet Maintenance 101 That Works

Thursday, August 12th, 2010

Yes, this really does work. My neighbor vacuums his house… a lot. He also uses the leaf blower….a lot. He may seem a bit compulsive, but his lawn looks pretty healthy even though we’ve had a terrific heat wave this summer and his carpeting looks brand new after a family of four have lived there for five years now. I found these tips on HGTV’s website and felt compelled to share.

Tip #1: Take Your Shoes Off
Once you get into the habit, it’s not that difficult. Shoes can drag in all sorts of nasty things so leave a place mat by the door to hold shoes.

Tip #2: Vacuum Often
Vacuum at least two times per week and more if the room gets a lot of traffic. Empty the vacuum cleaner bag before it gets full.

Tip #3: Keep a Carpet-Cleaning Kit Handy
Use lint-free rags to blot up spills, never rub! A bottle of carpet cleaner is always helpful. Directions may vary, but most will tell you to let the cleaner sit on the stain for a few minutes before removing with a plastic scraper so you don’t rub the cleaner too deeply into the carpeting.

Tip #4: (Don’t) Let the Sun Shine In
UV rays from sunlight can age carpet, so shut drapes or blinds before you leave for the day. Of course, you’ll want to keep them open when you’re at home, but if you’re not in a particular room for too long, why not keep them shut during the brightest part of the day?
